Gary Buxton

Gary Buxton PhotoGary Buxton, General Manager of Municipal Infrastructure, Town of Canmore: A Registered Professional Planner by trade, since late 2011, Gary has been in the position of General Manager of Municipal Infrastructure, coordinating the Planning, Engineering, Public Works and Facilities departments, and providing sustainability and leadership advice to the organization.

The departments that Gary leads deal with the many unique conditions that the community faces, from community planning and growth management, sustainability, environmental and wildlife corridor issues, significant non-permanent populations, undermining and stormwater management to resort planning, economic development and affordable housing concerns. Gary was an integral member of the small team that created the sustainability screening process and matrix that the Planning department uses to assess applications.

Gary first moved to Canmore in 1998, joining the Planning and Development Department, assuming the role of Manager in 2001, holding that position for 10 years. Much of his time has been spent recently assisting the town from recovering from the 2013 debris floods in the community, and also examining economic development and mountain town experiences from similar communities in western Canada and the western US, and attempting to draft policy to deal with the issues facing Canmore.

Outside of the office, you’ll usually find Gary on the local trails on one of his growing stable of mountain bikes, in winter or summer.

About the Town of Canmore’s Sustainability Screening Report (Alberta, Canada): Canmore’s Sustainability Screening Report (SSR) asks developers to come forward before a project is approved with a document that explains the net environmental, social, and economic benefit of their project as it relates to community sustainability.
