Susana is an elected member of the Board of Directors of the national Sierra Club, the nation’s oldest and largest environmental grassroots organization with 2.2 million members and supporters. She also serves on the Board’s Executive Committee. The Sierra Club Board of Directors oversees the health and capacity of 63 Chapters nationwide and is responsible for the overall performance of the organization. Susana started as a member of the Angeles Chapter political committee and served a three-year term as its Chair. Currently she is the Chapter’s PAC Fundraising Chair. She was also an active member of the national political committee of the Sierra Club for three years. Susana has led endorsement teams, candidate campaigns and political training workshops, and was a recipient of the Club’s political service award in 2006 and the Phil Bernays Service Award, the highest service award conferred by the Angeles Chapter. Her passion also includes advocating for outdoors and the wilderness. Susana worked tirelessly with activists and coalition partners on the designation of the San Gabriel Mountains as a national monument. Susana also serves on the Board of the L.A. League of Conservation Voters.
As a Senior Analyst in L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Sustainability Team, Susana ensures that policies and initiatives align with the goals of the Sustainable City Plan – a roadmap to the city’s environmental, economic, and equitable future. Susana spearheads an Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Working Group which works on transitioning of City light duty vehicles to EV fleet, piloting grid-tie backup systems, charging infrastructure, and community education. She oversees sustainable procurement practices; and serves as liaison to department sustainability officers on program implementation, metrics, and performance measures. In May 2015, she led the team which garnered a $1.6 million grant from the CA Air Resources Board for an electric vehicle car sharing pilot program in disadvantaged communities.
Susana Reyes was the pioneer behind the successful establishment of the Los Angeles City Facilities Recycling Program (CFRP) in 1991. CFRP, a component of the City of Los Angeles Solid Waste Management Policy Plan, addresses the source reduction and recycling requirements mandated by CA Assembly Bill 939. As its Program Manager for eight years, Susana was instrumental in instituting an award-winning comprehensive facilities recycling and waste prevention program for an estimated 300+ City-owned and leased facilities. Among Susana’s distinguished accolades is a Career Service Award by the City of Los Angeles in 1995 in recognition of her excellent achievements in recycling and other environmental initiatives.
