Building a Map for Cultural Relevancy at SHIFT

Aparna Rajagopal-Durbin, co-founder of The Avarna Group, will facilitate the Cultural Relevancy Workshop at SHIFT.

Cultural relevancy can feel like the elephant in the room. It’s big. It’s heavy. It’s overwhelming. If you feel like you’ve been talking the cultural relevancy, diversity, and inclusion talk but don’t know how to walk the walk, SHIFT presents a workshop customized to address your needs.

On Thursday, October 13, from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, immediately preceding the SHIFT Summit, SHIFT will host a Pre-Conference Workshop on Cultural Relevancy. Coordinated and run by The Avarna Group, the industry leader in diversity, equity and inclusion, the workshop will make the pachydermic work of cultural relevancy more palatable and less paralyzing by allowing you to take one bite at a time. We will guide you so you can more confidently articulate what the work entails, explain why it’s critical to the future of outdoor recreation and conservation, and build a plan for your organization to move forward with this work. You will leave with a map plotting your organization’s next steps and a compass to guide you there. You’ll also build relationships with peers in the industries who are engaged in the same work.

Objectives: At the conclusion of the workship, participants will be able to:

  • More confidently define and distinguish between diversity, inclusion, equity, and cultural competency), sometimes broadly referred to as cultural relevancy.
  • Clearly articulate why cultural relevancy is critical to the future of their respective
organizations as well as the conservation and outdoor recreation sector.
  • Share cultural relevancy successes and challenges with peers in the conservation and outdoor recreation sector.
  • Plot a universe of cultural relevancy strategies (including their respective organizations’ current strategies) on a four-quadrant map.
  • Begin to prioritize strategies in all four quadrants, and identify tactics and resources to support these strategies.

Registration will open August 15.
