Inspired by his participation in The 2018 SHIFT Festival, Outside Magazine journalist Aaron Reuben wrote the May cover story, “Ask Your Doctor If Nature Is Right For You,” on the growing grassroots movement of physicians prescribing time outside.
The 2018 SHIFT Festival convened outdoor recreationists, conservationists, physicians, land managers, scientists and healthcare executives to discuss the health benefits of recreating outside, and the ways we can leverage those benefits for protection of our natural world.
After leaving SHIFT, Reuben, Outside Magazine’s science writer, spent the next few months speaking with many of the health pioneers he’d met at SHIFT, including Dr. Robert Zarr (Parks Rx America), Dr. Nooshin Razani (SHINE Program), and Dr. David Sabgir (Walk With a Doc).
From doctors prescribing parks, to health insurance companies underwriting improvements to green spaces and access to parks, Reuben’s article showcases the leaders in the movement, where the movement stands now, and where it appears poised to go next.
“By underscoring the connection between nature contact and public health, we bolster the argument for nature itself,” said Christian Beckwith, SHIFT’s Director.
